It is difficult to tell how exactly North Calcutta Football Academy was formed. A number of ex-football players of the locality met occasionally at the Deshbandhu Park. They had all played in the Calcutta first Division and a few had represented India at the International level. Over cups of tea from the corner shop, they held heated debates about the sorry state of Indian football. Every once in a while, they would watch a youngster display special talent and wonder if the boy would ever get opportunities to develop. The idea of this Football Academy took shape during those friendly discussions. Through their contacts and reputation, very basic equipments like footballs and goal posts were obtained. Local authorities allowed a section of the park to be used for this purpose. Members of the group, by turn, coached. A few young boys, who turned up to kick football in the park, were the first trainees. By the end of the first six months a suitably qualified coach was found. Other formalities like registration were also completed.
Mr. Pashupati Bhattacharjee (Lentu-da), well known football administrator and a very popular person in the sports circles of Calcutta, had just retired from his services and took charge of the Academy.
